after installation I log in using the default "admin" password " " and the browser just returns to the log-in page no errors are displayed?

Have you looked at your webserver's log files?
Tell us more about your configuration.... server OS, webserver versions, etc. client OS, browser, etc.

I am battling pretty much the same issue as the user who originally posted, but here is some interesting data points.
1. The problem only occurs on IE. I have IE9 running on my test client as well as my server. If I use a Firefox client the problem disappears.
2. I have on rare occasions seen the login work on an IE client. I suspect it is a first login.
3. The server is Win2008, running PHP 5.3.11.
