Hello,
I too am having the grant problem. I have seen the instructions to manually create the database... but I'll be honest MySql is not my first language and I'm not sure how to actually do it.
Let me tell you what I *have* done.
In my sites CPanel, I have gone to MySql Database wizard and created a DB and user & p/w, and given the user full permissions. I have gone to the ODM install, entered everything and when I hit install it installs and says
Checking that templates_c folder is writeable... OK
installing...
Database Created
Database Selected
Could not set GRANT;
And obviously with the Grant problem when I try to login with admin I get...
There is a problem with your dataDir. Check to make sure it exists and is writeable
I have put in permissions on directories to 777 to no avail... The install error log is empty
I sure hope you can help!

Actually, that error message usually means either:
a) your dataDir is not configured in the config file
b) your dataDir is not accessible to the web server
